"Sex power and the divine" delves into the complex dichotomy of women's roles in modern India. Jonathan Legg embarks on a country-wide journey to highlight the disparity in women's rights in different parts of the country; From poor women in rural Uttar Pradesh who are cast away or threatened by their own families on a whim - to matrilineal tribes of the North East who are so empowered that the men clamour for more rights and equality.

While India's current gender roles are still being defined today, the tension has recently sprang into international attention, and its backdrop must be explored only by digging into the historical anthropology of sexuality in the country.
